The Balkan Documentary Center‘s new initiative, «Balkan Watchers – Media Program for Documentary Films and Podcasts,» addresses the urgent need for a safe and supportive environment for journalists, filmmakers, and activists, who often face daunting challenges like self-censorship and various threats in the Balkans and surrounding regions.
Recognising the crucial role of media in fostering democratic values and open societies, the Balkan Documentary Center has designed the program to nurture talent and encourage critical storytelling. By focusing on documentary films and podcasts, the initiative offers a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, particularly in areas where freedom of expression is under threat.
The program is in collaboration with One World Romania and is structured to provide comprehensive support to its participants. It includes a series of three modules: a development workshop in Bucharest, an online pitching preparation, and a final pitching and selection session in Sofia. This structure ensures that participants not only receive financial support but also gain valuable skills and insights into the art of storytelling and production.
One of the key features of the «Balkan Watchers» initiative is its emphasis on collaborative projects between EU and non-EU countries. This approach fosters cross-border cooperation and promotes a broader understanding of regional issues, contributing to a more interconnected and empathetic European media landscape.
The program is open to journalists, filmmakers, and activists working on documentary film projects or podcasts, with the deadline for applications set for 1 March, 2024.
