LOGLINE:
Thirteen years, five cities, and twenty-nine voices — from a former Palestinian prime minister to an Israeli soldier who broke ranks, from Noam Chomsky to Jeremy Corbyn — TOGETHER follows one director’s long, unresolved attempt to ask a single question of everyone he meets: after a century of violence, what would it actually take for Israelis and Palestinians to live free and together?

Truls Lie – Director, cinematographer, editor

I first travelled to Palestine and Israel thirteen years ago, and this film grew out of that return, conversation by conversation, with Palestinians, Israelis and Norwegians who see the situation from very different vantage points. My background in philosophy and journalism shapes the film’s register: it sits with the violence, the diplomacy – the Oslo Accords and what came after – the cultural and political activism on both sides, and the still-contested vision of a shared, binational future (one-state solution). I did not set out to make a film that tells the audience what to conclude. I set out to make one that makes the argument itself visible.
My motivation comes from two overlapping identities: as a humanist, and as a Norwegian who has always looked outward. I am trained in media and continental philosophy, and I’m drawn to a pragmatic anarchism – a belief in individual freedom bound to international solidarity, and a corresponding suspicion of suppressive power and militarism. Living for the past several years in Sicily has only deepened my attachment to the Mediterranean and to the more collectively minded East that borders it.
