HUMAN IDFF announces 2024 Norwegian Competition titles

The HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival, Oslo’s premier event celebrating documentary filmmaking, is set to take place from 4th to 10th March, 2024. This year’s festival features two competitive programmes, including a special segment dedicated to ten new Norwegian documentaries. These films are in the running for the HUMAN Award 2024, accompanied by a cash prize of NOK 50,000.

Among the Norwegian entries, several films have already garnered international acclaim, underscoring the global reach and significance of the festival. Notably, two films made their debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

Ibelin, directed by Benjamin Ree, tells the poignant story of Mats, a 25-year-old gamer who lived a vibrant life through World of Warcraft despite battling a muscle disease. A New Kind of Wilderness, directed by Silje Evensmo Jacobsen, offers an intimate look into the life of a self-sufficient family shaken by unforeseen tragedy.

Adding to the festival’s allure is Life is Beautiful, a Norwegian-Palestinian documentary by Mohamed Jabaly. The film, which opened the Tromsø Film Festival, has already earned Jabaly the Best Director award at IDFA.

The festival’s lineup is rounded out by an array of compelling films, including Letter to Håkon Banken, Democrazy, Lie to Me, Woolly, Sisters Love Forever, Tax Wars, and Todd & Super-Stella.

This year’s advance jury, comprising esteemed filmmakers Jan Dalchow, Linn Helene Løken, and Liew Ceng Teng, praised the selection of films for their «incredible journeys of discovery» and «beautiful moments.» Their comments reflect the festival’s dedication to highlighting films that not only entertain but also inspire and provoke thought.
