European Film Academy announces 2023 documentary film selection

The European Film Academy has unveiled a robust lineup of 14 feature-length documentaries, recommended for nomination in the upcoming European Film Awards 2023. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Berlin on December 9.

The selection spans 16 European countries, showcasing the rich diversity in European cinema. Both EU and non-EU countries are represented in the list, underlining the transnational nature of the continent’s filmmaking community.

To be eligible for the awards, documentaries must meet certain criteria, including having a European director and having had their first official screening between 1 June, 2022, and 31 May, 2023. Additional documentaries premiering at summer festivals may still be added to the list, with announcements expected in September.

In the weeks ahead, the 4,600-strong membership of the European Film Academy will begin viewing the selected documentaries. Nominations will be finalized based on member votes and publicly announced on 7 November, 2023. The final winner will be determined by Academy members and revealed at the awards ceremony in December.
