Between 29 July and 4 August, the picturesque border village of Melgaço will once again transform into the epicentre of international documentary cinema, hosting the 10th edition of the MDOC—Melgaço International Documentary Festival. This year’s festival is dedicated to pressing global themes, including the Palestinian conflict, human rights, migration, colonialism, the environment, and gender issues, highlighted through 22 premieres.

The festival’s official selection comprises 31 films, including 20 feature films and 11 short and medium-length films, representing a diverse array of nationalities, such as Portugal, Indonesia, France, Russia, Germany, Austria, USA, Italy, Canada, and the Netherlands. These films will compete for the prestigious Jean-Loup Passek and Don Quixote Awards.

MDOC 2024 promises to be a landmark event, with the vast majority of directors attending, fostering discussions on identity, memory, borders, and current global crises. Among the standout entries are three documentaries that provide distinct perspectives on the Palestinian conflict: Un Long Chemin Vers la Paix by Tal Barda, Voyage à Gaza by Piero Usberti, and No Other Land by the collective Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor.

Human rights are prominently featured in Of Caravan and the Dogs by Askold Kurov, exploring the suppression of free speech in Putin’s Russia, and Democracy Noir by Connie Field, which critiques the autocratic tendencies of Hungarian president Viktor Orbán. Gender issues are addressed in My Stolen Planet by Farahnaz Sharif and Maydegol by Sarvnaz Alambeigi, highlighting the struggles of women in Iran and Afghanistan.

Post-colonial themes and environmental concerns are also central, with films like The Battle for Laikipia and The Savanna and the Mountain delving into the effects of climate change and land ownership conflicts.

Beyond the screenings, MDOC offers a rich program, including workshops, masterclasses, exhibitions, and tours, ensuring an immersive cultural experience for all attendees. This edition of MDOC is set to make a significant impact, encouraging audiences to reflect on the complex and evolving issues that shape our world.
