DAFilms launches global online retrospective honouring Barbara Hammer

Written by:

DAFilms has launched a worldwide online retrospective celebrating the life and work of #Barbara Hammer#, a groundbreaking figure in experimental and queer cinema. Titled «Barbara Hammer – Radical Visibility,» the curated program brings together six key works from Hammer’s five-decade-long career, offering global audiences a rare opportunity to engage with her pioneering vision.

Known for centring lesbian histories, bodies, and sensibilities in avant-garde film, Hammer’s oeuvre redefined the boundaries of cinematic expression. Her films not only challenged heteronormative frameworks but also expanded the language of visual storytelling through radical form and content.

The retrospective features seminal works including Dyketactics (1974), No No Nooky T.V. (1987), Superdyke Meets Madame X (1976, co-directed with Max Almy), Nitrate Kisses (1992), Lesbian Whale (2015), and A Month of Single Frames (2019, co-directed with Lynne Sachs). Each film reflects Hammer’s commitment to making visible the lives and desires of lesbian communities often excluded from mainstream representation.

The streaming program is available globally via DAFilms.com, with all materials presented in collaboration with the Estate of Barbara Hammer and Electronic Arts Intermix.
