Open City Docs is home to several projects in the world of documentary. Founded at UCL by Prof. Michael Stewart in 2010, Open City Docs is dedicated to developing and supporting non-fiction storytellers. The organisation nurtures the next generation of filmmakers, audio producers and VR filmmakers through training programmes, an annual film festival, and other screening projects throughout the year.

The Festival Director is responsible for delivering a dynamic, inspiring, and nurturing film festival in London each year. Together with the Founding Director and the Director of Programming, the post holder will shape the annual festival responding to themes deriving from the character of current film production, the festival’s mission, audience and income targets. Through developing and delivering the vision for the festival’s industry progamme, the post holder will play a key role in promoting the practice of a university that has porous walls and an open relationship with the industry that sustains its work.
The slight shift of emphasis outlined above in ‘Context’ demands a coherent vision of the festival, our relationship with the film industry and the connection of these to the intellectual and artistic life of our city and UCL. The post holder will work with the existing team to refine and realise this vision.
The post holder will be instrumental in contributing to the overall strategy for the festival, working in consultation with the existing team. The post holder will also oversee the wider festival team including programming, marketing, leading on marketing and branding. They will act as overall project manager for the festival, coordinating staffing and logistics with the team and key partners within UCL including the Anthropology department, our broader faculties and UCL East partners. The post holder will oversee the festival budget and festival production.
Open City Documentary Festival is run through the year by a small group with considerable teamwork and sharing of responsibilities. It is essential that the post holder be committed to this kind of working environment.
