The 34th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is just over two weeks away. Today, Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia unveiled the festival’s opening film and its main competition selections. As of today, the festival lineup of 264 titles is now complete. IDFA 2021 runs from November 17 to 28 in Amsterdam.
The opening film will be Four Journeys by Louis Hothothot (Louis Yi Liu) – a first-person narrative of a filmmaker born in China in 1986 as an «illegal» second child, Louis and his family suffered devastating consequences at the hands of the authorities, with painful reverberations still felt to this day.
Fourteen films will make up IDFA’s International Competition, with artistically confident, well-rounded, and universally relevant films, each of which expresses an unparalleled cinematic mastery that is at once both intricate and effortless. Next, fifteen titles make up the Envision Competition where filmmaking defies all expectations, rewriting the definition of documentary with radical artistic choices of every stripe shine. In this section Four Journeys screens, with additional films unleashing the human act of creativity to make the invisible visible and resonate with experiences beneath the surface. Furthermore, IDFA also presented the projects for its IDFA DocLab Competition for Immersive Non-Fiction and IDFA DocLab Competition for Digital Storytelling.
