Krakow Film Festival 2024

First Chilean documentary to feature at Venice Critics Week

After its triumph at the 2022 Cannes Docs, Malqueridas is set to be featured in the parallel section of the prestigious 80th Venice International Film Festival, participating in the 38th Settimana Internazionale della Critica de Venezia.

Directed by Tana Gilbert and produced by Paola Castillo, Malqueridas portrays the daily lives of incarcerated mothers in Chile, highlighting their struggles as they raise their children from a distance and find solace in the companionship of fellow inmates. The film utilises images recorded by cell phones inside the prison to construct the women’s stories, offering a glimpse into the collective memory of this marginalised community. The central voice in the documentary belongs to Karina, a woman who spent more than six years in confinement. Her narrative was developed based on extensive conversations with over twenty women, aiming to reflect their shared experiences.

Malqueridas marks a significant milestone as the first Chilean documentary to premiere in the Venice International Critics’ Week 38 year history. The producers plan to initiate an impact campaign to raise awareness about the situation of incarcerated women, particularly mothers, and advocate for potential changes in prison policies concerning cell phone possession and alternative motherhood options.
