Each year, Cinéma du réel presents to the public documentary films from all over the world, offering a wide range of forms and cinematic approaches. In addition to the competition, through a selection of rare or unreleased films, heritage or contemporary productions, the festival throws light on the formal developments and experiments affecting documentary filmmaking in relation to the history of film. For 2023, Cinéma du réel celebrates in 45th edition from 24 March to 2 April.
In its 2023 competition, Cinéma du réel features world, international, and French premieres of both international and national productions. A total of 41 works, running from 4 to 634 minutes have been selected and will be shown in the presence of the filmmakers. Find more information on the official list of competition films – HERE.
In addition to the competiton films, Cinéma du réel incudes the programme «The World, Distorted». While documentary films show the world, some filmmakers choose to distort reality to better explore it. The resulting films do not depict another world to reach for. Instead, they paint another story of our world. With films by Raya Martin, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Pierre Creton, Luis Lopez Carrasco and more.
Further highlights announced thus far include the new filmmaker focused «A First Window», nature-centric «Popular Front(s)», and training «Varan in Vietnam». Finally, two round-table discussions bringing together filmmakers, historians, philosophers, as well as theater directors, visual artists, and photographers around the notion of the event will pose and ponder the questions: What is an event? A mere modification or a new world?
