The 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, scheduled from 7 to 17 March, 2024, will feature 36 documentaries in its competition, including 9 Greek productions.
The festival’s competition is structured into several sections: the International Competition, Newcomers, and Film Forward, each designed to highlight different aspects of documentary filmmaking. The Golden Alexander award in the International Competition notably secures a spot for the winning documentary in the Oscars’ shortlist for Best Documentary Feature.
In addition to previously mentioned films such as Stray Bodies, Unclaimed, and Unclickable, the festival lineup is enriched with a variety of compelling documentaries. Highlights include A New Kind of Wilderness, which transports viewers to the dark Norwegian woods to explore a family’s upheaval following a tragic loss, and And So It Begins, depicting the defense of truth and democracy in the #Philippines. Forest delves into the life of a family living near Europe’s oldest forest, whose life changes with the arrival of refugees, while Johatsu – Into Thin Air unveils the shadowy world of Japan’s «night movers.»
Moreover, My Stolen Planet offers a poignant reflection on life in Iran during the #Islamic Revolution# through the lens of collected 8mm film fragments, and Nocturnes follows an ecologist’s quest in the Himalayan forests, highlighting our fragile relationship with #nature. Additional intriguing entries like Pol Pot Dancing and Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other provide unique insights into historical figures and personal dynamics, respectively.
