Al Jazeera Documentary Industry Days announces full list of 2024 award winners

The 2024 edition of Al Jazeera Documentary Industry Days, held from 14th to 16th September, celebrated the creativity and impact of documentary filmmakers from Southeast Europe, the Caucasus, and the MENA region. Over the course of three days, 29 projects were presented, competing for over €120,000 in co-production grants and cash prizes across four categories: Main Pitch, Rough Cut, Balkan Stars, and Special Selection.

Notable awards include:

Al Jazeera Documentary Channel Awards:

  • Main Pitch (Co-production of $25,000): The Amateur Photographer’s Family Portrait, directed by Nurlan Hasanli
  • Work in Progress (Co-production of $15,000): 32 Meters, directed by Morteza Atabaki
  • Balkan Stars (Co-production of $10,000): Weeping Houses, directed by Srđan Perkić

Al Jazeera Balkans Awards:

  • Main Pitch (Co-production of €8,000): Big in Gazi Baba, directed by Pauline Blanchet
  • Work in Progress (Co-production of €7,000): Dreams of the Wild Oaks, directed by Marjan Khosravi
  • Balkan Stars (Co-production of €5,000): Third Person, directed by Dragan Gmizić

Other notable winners include:

  • For Whom the Bells Toll? (BelDocs Award), directed by Denis Karam and Zlatko Ivanišević
  • Magma (Progress Film Award), directed by Mia Bendrimia
  • The Other Gaza (Sunny Side of the Doc Award), directed by Wafa Jamil
  • Weeping Houses (BH Telecom Award and Film Center of Montenegro Balkan Star Award), directed by Srđan Perkić
