Thessaloniki Documentary Festival sets 2026 tribute to the power of archives

Written by:

Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival will run 5–15 March 2026, and will spotlight archival practice with a major tribute titled «All the world’s memory», a reference to All the World’s Memory (1956).

The tribute frames archives as living forces that can reshape present-day understanding when previously hidden or overlooked materials surface. Programming will span screenings, open discussions, and special events, with particular emphasis on found-footage and archive-driven forms, including works built from newsreels, official collections, home videos, and internet-native material. The festival notes that four «desktop documentaries» will be presented together in a single slot.

As part of a collaboration with the General State Archives of Greece, the festival commissioned a new 10-minute short film from Aristotelis Maragkos, described as an animation that approaches official records as repositories of untold stories and material traces, rather than strictly statutory documents.

The commission will also host a public panel on Monday, 9 March at 11:00 at Pavlos Zannas, beginning with the premiere screening of the new short. Panellists listed by the festival include archive producer and clearance specialist Elizabeth Klinck, ERT Archive director Vasilis Alexopoulos, Amalia Pappa of the General State Archives, British Pathé licensing executive Éric Cambronne, and Takis Zondiros, known as Greek Visions.

Film selections cited in the tribute range from early landmarks such as Rose Hobart and Workers Leaving the Factory to later archive-centred features including The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceaușescu, I Am Not Your Negro, State Funeral, and Trains.
