Balkan Documentary Center launches call for 2025 Balkan Watchers program

Written by:

The Balkan Documentary Center (BDC) has announced the 2025 call for its #Balkan Watchers# program, aimed at fostering critical storytelling through documentary films and podcasts. This initiative offers journalists, filmmakers, and activists a platform to confront societal issues in regions with restricted press freedom.

The program seeks to support 20 projects—10 films and 10 podcasts—with six projects receiving financial backing (€25,000 per film and €5,000 per podcast) alongside mentorship. Participants will benefit from a comprehensive training program delivered in three phases: a seminar in Bucharest, an online pitch preparation module, and a final event at #Sofia DocuMental# in October 2025. The culminating event will feature an awards ceremony where an international jury will select winning projects for funding.

The Balkan Watchers initiative underscores the BDC’s commitment to promoting independent media in the Balkans and neighbouring regions, addressing challenges such as censorship and limited resources. It emphasizes journalistic integrity and democratic values, aiming to bring impactful, empathetic narratives to a global audience.

Residents from eligible EU and non-EU countries can apply until January 5 2025. For more information, visit BDC’s website.
