As part of the online Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, Cannes Docs brings its selection of screenings and events to the hybrid event, and 6 – 15 July, 2021. Aside from the variety of workshops, industry events, screenings, as well as its culminating event, Doc Day, Cannes Docs has also curated 5 expert-led industry panels alongside its estival partners. DMZ Docs, DOK Leipzig, Ji.hlava IDFF, Visions du Réel, and It’s All True/E Tudo Verdade will all discuss topical issues in the field of documentary film and festivals. Aside from the variety of workshops, industry events, screenings, as well as its culminating event, Doc Day, Cannes Docs has also curated 5 expert-led industry panels alongside its estival partners. DMZ Docs, DOK Leipzig, Ji.hlava IDFF, Visions du Réel, and It’s All True/E Tudo Verdade will all discuss topical issues in the field of documentary film and festivals.

July 7

  • 17:00 – 18:00: It’s All True / É Tudo VerdadeDocumenting The Amazon: A Dialogue with Jorge Bodanzky and João Moreira Salles
    • About: In spite of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Brazilian Amazon deforestation reached a 12-year record in 2020. 20% of the world largest rainforest had been cut down since the Portuguese colonization started in 1500, roughly 99% in the last half century. No filmmaker has been documenting the Amazon longer and better than Jorge Bodansky. He started visiting the region as a photojournalist in the mid-1960’s and is working in the post-production of a new documentary, “The Amazon, A New Minamata?”. Another of the leading Brazilian documentarists, João Moreira Salles (Santiago; In The Intense Now), reported on the region in the eve of the pandemic in a ground-breaking 6-part series of articles, titled Arrabalde (Outskirts), at the monthly magazine piauí. A discussion about documenting the past, present and future of one of the most essential regions of the Earth’s ecosystem.

July 8

  • 10:00 – 11:00: DMZ DocsConnecting the Dots: Asian documentaries and their home ground windows
    • About:The international documentary community has witnessed so many talented filmmakers and their creative ideas across the Asian region. But do we really know where they are at, what path they are taking and how we can reach out to Asian creativity? We invite five key documentary film festivals that are in the front line of discovering Asian documentaries to catch up with current trends in Asian documentary filmmaking and to get to know their key mission as film festivals representing each region.

July 9

  • 17:30 – 18:30: Sheffield Doc/FestCo-Producing with the UK
    • About: How can UK, European and international producers co-produce in the post-Brexit era? What criteria must be fulfilled for co-production and eligibility for tax relief and UK Funds? To illuminate the present opportunities for collaborating with the UK, this session will assemble perspectives and case studies from producers and policy experts.

July 10

  • 16:30 – 17:30: Visions du ReelWorking With Archives: Jean-Gabriel Périot’s Method
    • About:In parallel to the screening of Jean-Gabriel Périot’s new film, Returning to Reims (Fragments) as part of the Directors’ Fortnight, Visions du Réel invites the French director to discuss his long-standing work with archives.

  • 16:00 – 17:00: Ji.hlava IDFFBack To ‘Normal’? How the Pandemic Affected the Unbalanced Regional Representation at Film Festivals
    • About: Jihlava’s East West Index has stirred up debate and attracted media attention in recent years over the unbalanced representation of various regions at film festivals around the world. How has the pandemic affected the situation?
