At the 40th #Sundance Film Festival, a significant development took place as Film Workers for Palestine released an open letter, bringing attention to the ongoing #conflict in #Gaza. The group, consisting of professionals from various sectors of the film industry, utilised the festival’s platform to express their concerns and call for action.

The letter provided a detailed account of the situation in Gaza, citing figures to highlight the severity of the conflict: more than 24,000 people killed, including 9,600 children, and 61,000 injured over a period of just over three months. It also described the extensive damage to infrastructure and the lack of essential resources like water, food, and electricity.

In their appeal, Film Workers for Palestine listed several demands, including an immediate ceasefire, lifting of the siege on Gaza, and the release of Palestinian prisoners and hostages. They also addressed broader issues such as the end of the occupation and the cessation of U.S. military aid to Israel.

The letter criticised the response of cultural and political entities to the crisis, highlighting instances of censorship and bias against pro-Palestinian sentiment. It pointed out the challenges faced by those expressing solidarity with Palestine, from cultural institutions’ policies to legislative actions, and the portrayal of the Palestinian narrative in mainstream media.

During the Sundance Film Festival, the letter from Film Workers for Palestine aimed to remind attendees of the influential role the film industry can play in addressing global issues. The group emphasised the need for the film community to actively engage in promoting justice and equality, encouraging a stance against complicity in the face of injustice. As of 19 January, overly 700 film professionals from across the globe have signed the letter in solidarity. Among those names are Ken Loach, #Jessica Kingdon#, Aki Kaurismäki, #Guy Davidi#, #Sam Pollard#, #Petra Costa#, #Jessica Beshir#, and many more.
