As part of the online Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, Cannes Docs brings its selection of screenings and events to the hybrid event, and 6 – 15 July, 2021.

Aside from the variety of workshops, industry events, screenings, as well as its culminating event, Doc Day, Cannes Docs has also curated several masterclasses and workshops, including a very special masterclass with 2021 Carrosse d’Or’ recipient #Frederick Wiseman#.

• 14:30 – 15:30: Interrogating the Archive: Mining the Gaps
  • About:The documentary work and practice of director/producer/editor Sam Pollard bears witness to the critical role of the archive in the consideration, investigation, and recovery of public and private histories. His recent film MLK/FBI (2020) is told almost entirely through historical (and recently restored) footage and based on newly discovered and declassified government files, reveals the FBI’s deliberate and elaborate surveillance and campaign of harassment and intimidation of Dr. King. This conversation with author and curator Dr. Terri Francis, Director of the Black Film Center/Archive, will focus on access to independent, community-based and personal collections, research practices and methodology, the challenges of uncovering hidden or suppressed material, and the critical importance of interrogating the archive.
