Sofia DocuMENTAL kicks off with Human Rights-focused programme

Sofia DocuMENTAL, Bulgaria’s only documentary event focused on human rights, has kicks off its complete program for the fifth edition. Taking place across nine key locations in Sofia from 28 September to 7 October, this year’s festival will feature 30 Bulgarian premieres, with tickets now available for screenings.

Under the theme Step out of the bubble», Sofia DocuMental 2024 aims to challenge viewers by presenting a curated selection of global documentaries. The nine-day festival groups films into six thematic categories, each highlighting crucial social, political, and personal issues.

The Metamorphosis category focuses on stories of personal transformation, opening with Stray Bodies by Elina Psikou. Other notable films in this section include Johatsu – Into Thin Air, exploring individuals who vanish to start new lives, and a portrait of a Croatian-Roma couple challenging societal norms.

The Sphere of Influence and Democracy Under Fire sections delve into pressing global concerns. Films such as Putin’s Playground and Democracy Noir offer in-depth examinations of political figures and regimes, prompting audiences to consider the underlying causes and long-term impacts of today’s news.

In Archival Heritage, personal and family archives bring historical events to life, with stories spanning from the Bosnian War to the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The festival also celebrates artistic defiance in the Art of Resistance category, and addresses ecological and technological shifts in Human/Nature and The Future Is Now.
