The sixth edition of #Sofia DocuMental# closed with a string of awards recognizing both completed films and works in development, as the festival’s industry platform, the Balkan Documentary Market (BDM), distributed nearly €100,000 in support across film and podcast projects. The market ran 30 September – October alongside the festival, bringing nearly 70 international guests to Sofia for pitching forums tied to BDC Discoveries and the #Balkan Watchers# media program.
BDC Discoveries, the Balkan Documentary Center’s long-running development program, presented two distinctions: the Best Pitch Award (State Institute for Culture) went to A Land That Time Forgot (dir. Denis Pavlovic; prod. Denis Pavlovic, Julia Meyer-Pavlovic), while the #Lightdox Award, offering a year of marketing and distribution mentorship, went to Life on Pause (dir. Antoniy Hristov; prod. Svetla Turnin).
Now in its second year, Balkan Watchers—BDC’s training and networking initiative for journalists and podcasters—awarded €25,000 each to three documentary film projects:
- From Radvanka (dir. Tomi Hazhlinsky; Contemporary Ukrainian Cinema, Ukraine)
- Symbols of War (dir. Nenad Mikalacki; Druid, Serbia)
- My Sister and the Eternal Feminine (dir. Rati Tsiteladze; ArtWay Film, Georgia)
Podcast awards of €5,000 each went to How They See Us: Balkan History Through the Eyes of the Other (Greece), The House of Armenian-Georgian Border (Armenia/Georgia), and The Quota (Romania). The program also piloted a Storytel partnership supporting Bulgarian podcast development. Winners were selected by international juries and announced at the 4 October ceremony.
In the festival competition dedicated to women in documentary cinema, the Grand Prize for Best Director was awarded to journalist-filmmaker Lina Vdovii for Tata, co-directed by Radu Ciorniciuc. The jury—Marta Golba-Nauman (Her Docs Foundation), editor Stephan Krumbiegel, and producer Katya Trichkova—praised the film’s courageous, personal approach to intergenerational trauma.
Kristina Nikolova’s In Hell with Ivo received both a Special Jury Mention and the Audience Award, the latter presented on 5 October during The Big Cinema, a new open-air initiative in central Sofia.In remarks accepting the award, subject Ivo Dimchev highlighted the centrality of audiences to the film’s home-concert format.
