As the 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival unveils its «Citizen Queer» tribute, the spotlight turns to the stories that have shaped and enriched the #queer narrative in world cinema. This grand tribute is more than just a retrospective; it’s a vibrant celebration of self-determination, identity, and the #LGBTQI+ community’s evolution through the lens of documentary filmmaking.

At the forefront of this year’s festival, held from 7th to 17th March, are tales that span from the intimate to the universal. They tell of personal journeys and historical milestones, featuring figures from our own lives and communities, encouraging a reflection on what defines us collectively. The festival is not only about looking back but also about the transformative changes still to come in the pursuit of complete and self-fulfillment.

Guiding the curation of this year’s tribute are trailblazers like #Maria Cyber#, a pioneering Greek lesbian activist; Rico Johnson-Sinclair, an influential figure in the UK’s queer film circuit; and Simon(e) van Saarloos, a Dutch writer and curator. Their combined expertise promises a lineup that is as diverse as it is poignant, with over 25 films on the docket.

Kickstarting the discussions will be classics such as The Homosexual Century, which dares to fill the gaps left by official history on queer identities, and Iconic Betty, a poignant exploration of a #transsexual woman’s loneliness and #identity. Not to be overlooked is The Celluloid Closet, an essential critique of LGBTQI+ representation in Hollywood, alongside Gendernauts, a groundbreaking delve into gender transition.

Queer Japan brings to the fore the vivid journey from silence to visibility in Japanese society, while Tilos Weddings spotlights a monumental moment in Greek LGBTQI+ history with the first same-sex weddings on the island of Tilos.

Complementing the film screenings, the Non-Catalog offers insightful texts exploring the depths of queer documentary. This initiative, alongside a series of actions supporting EuroPride 2024 in Thessaloniki, solidifies the festival’s commitment to advocating for visibility, inclusivity, and celebration of the LGBTQI+ community. The full lineup of films and discussions remains highly anticipated.
