Exploring radical environmentalism at the 65th Krakow Film Festival

Written by:

Two documentaries exploring complex relationships between humans and nature have been selected for the International Documentary Competition at the 65th Krakow Film Festival. Pet Farm by Finn Walther and Martin Walther and Tooth and Nail by Mihai Dragolea and Radu Mocanu examine themes of #activism, environmental protection, and ethical dilemmas, presenting thought-provoking perspectives on human intervention in the natural world.

Pet Farm follows Joakim, a Norwegian man devoted to breeding and domesticating foxes despite national laws prohibiting fur animal breeding. His deep attachment to the animals and battle against authorities raise ethical and legal questions about human influence over wildlife. The film captures Joakim’s relentless fight to preserve his vision, blurring the line between selfless care and exploitation.

Meanwhile, Tooth and Nail documents activist Tiberiu’s determined struggle against illegal logging in Romania’s primeval forests. The film exposes corruption within the country’s forestry administration and the environmental destruction that follows, affecting both flora and fauna. Tiberiu’s activism, shared widely on social media, has drawn the attention of authorities as well as dangerous opponents linked to the criminal underworld. The documentary includes raw, immediate footage of violent encounters experienced by both the activist and the filmmakers.

The 65th Krakow Film Festival, running from 25 May to 1 June 2025, will showcase 15 international documentaries competing for the prestigious Golden and Silver Horn awards. The event is recognized as a qualifying festival for the Academy Awards, European Film Awards, and BAFTA Awards. Passes are now available for purchase, with an online program streaming from 30 May to 15 June via KFF VOD.
