Chile will mark a significant presence at the 32nd edition of Sheffield DocFest, the UK’s leading documentary festival and industry market, taking place from 18 to 23 June with three official selections and five production companies participating.

Leading the slate is Unwelcomed, directed by Amilcar Infante and Sebastián González, which will have its European premiere in the festival’s «Journeys» section. The film, which won the Emerging International Filmmaker Award at Hot Docs 2024, addresses the human side of Chile’s migration crisis, beginning with the burning of migrants’ belongings in the country’s north.

Two Chilean projects have been selected for the prestigious MeetMarket. The Safest Place by Milena Castro and Magdalena Hurtado is an intimate portrait of three women confronting childhood sexual abuse. Meanwhile, Chilean Untitled Documentary, directed by Carola Fuentes and produced with international backing, investigates the long-term impact of multinational corporations in Latin America.

Additional Chilean projects in development will be represented by Brisa Films and Juntos Films. These include Aliyá, Yeridá, a personal exploration of identity and diaspora; You the Artists, which tracks a filmmaker’s disillusionment after Chile’s constitutional referendum; The Stationary Traveller, a metafilm involving cult director Cristián Sánchez; and An Invisible Lady, a haunting investigation into the invisibility of the elderly.
