The 22nd edition of the Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) opens its doors from 8 to 17 March, aiming to explore the potential of cinema in shaping a better future amidst a backdrop of escalating global crises. The festival seeks to offer insights into our complex era without succumbing to pessimism, highlighting both pragmatic solutions and visionary ideas over ten days of films and discussions in Geneva.
A key feature of this year’s FIFDH is the introduction of “Spotlight,” a section dedicated to the commitment of filmmakers and the protagonists of their films. This initiative reflects the festival’s belief in cinema’s unique capacity to foster empathy and communal understanding, positioning it as a powerful tool for human rights advocacy.
The festival will host several notable figures, including #Angela Davis#, an acclaimed writer and human rights activist, #Dmitri Mouratov#, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and co-founder of Novaya Gazeta, and #Motaz Azaiza#, a Palestinian photojournalist.
Among the world premieres is An Unfinished Journey, by Amie Williams and Aeyliya Husain, which documents the plight of Afghan women leaders in exile. The film will be accompanied by a discussion on the situation of women in #Afghanistan, featuring, among others, former Afghan minister #Nargis Nehan#. Another highlight is Of Caravan and the Dogs, by Askold Kurov and an anonymous co-director, offering an inside look at the operations of Novaya Gazeta and featuring a discussion with Dmitri Muratov on Russian society’s view of the war in Ukraine.
The festival will also spotlight the narratives of Palestinian filmmakers and journalists, including a session with Motaz Azaiza on Palestinian perspectives. Films such as The Teacher by Farah Nabulsi and Life is Beautiful by Mohamed Jabaly will delve into the complexities of life in the occupied territories, accompanied by forums aimed at fostering dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.
The #FIFDH will address a wide range of global challenges through its forums, including environmental protection, climate equity, sustainable agriculture, and the impact of artificial intelligence on society. Discussions will feature contributions from experts and activists like Angela Davis and #Claire Nouvian#, exploring systemic issues and potential solutions.
To engage young audiences, the festival includes films like Drôles d’oiseaux and Pachamama, aimed at introducing children to #human rights# issues through storytelling. Additionally, the festival’s professional program, #Impact Days#, will support film projects in the production phase, with over 150 filmmakers from around the world participating, including Mexican actor #Diego Luna#, who will highlight the challenges of press freedom in Mexico.
