From June 22nd to 28th, #Sunny Bunny# Film Festival not only offers unwavering support for Ukranian queer cinema but also serves as a powerful reminder that #Ukraine is an integral part of a free and diverse democratic world. With a lineup featuring films from #Spain, #Sweden, #Germany, #Brazil, the #USA, and more, the festival showcases a selection of narratives, shorts, documentaries and non-fiction films that explore #LGBTQ+ themes, challenge societal norms, and shed light on underrepresented communities.
The Sunny Bunny Film Festival’s documentary program presents a captivating array of films that delve deep into personal journeys, shed light on social issues, and offer intimate glimpses into the lives of individuals and communities. These thought-provoking documentaries provide a unique perspective and highlight the diverse experiences within the LGBTQ+ community, including shining a light on those in development. Some of those in development are:
The documentary Step Into The Comfort Zone (2024, in development), directed by Yura Dvizhon and Nastia Alieksieieva, focuses on individuals who grew up and came of age during the Soviet era. This film delves into the pressures, discrimination, self-discovery, and love experienced by LGBTQI+ people in a society marked by societal and cultural constraints.
Queens Of Joy (2024, in production), directed by Olga Gibelinda, brings attention to three remarkable individuals—a Ukrainian trans celebrity, a drag queen, and a queer performer serving on the frontline. Uniting their voices, the documentary highlights their personal stories and explores how they navigate their identities and the impact of war on their lives.
And at the festival, you can find these documentaries:
My Father Is My Mother’s Brother (2018) – the documentary captures the life of one of the brightest stars of Ukrainian queer art and music scene – Anatoly Belov (Ukrainian Queer Retrospective Programme). And two docs about LGBTQI+ militaries, Ukrainian Queer Fighters For Freedom and Rebel Queers: Ukraine’s Queer Resistance. Also, there are several short docs in the special Ukrainian programme.
