The Nordisk Panorama Film Festival has unveiled its Opening Night Gala selections for 2024, showcasing two anticipated films: Maybe Elephants, an animated short directed by Oscar winner Torill Kove, and Echo of You, a Danish documentary by Zara Zerny. Both films have already made waves at major international festivals like Annecy, ZagrebDox, and Hot Docs.
This year, the festival’s competition features 57 films vying for awards in five categories: Best Nordic Documentary, Best Nordic Short Film, New Nordic Voice, Young Nordic, and the City of Malmö’s Audience Award. The Best Nordic Documentary category, sponsored by major Nordic public broadcasters including DR, NRK, RUV, SVT, and YLE, offers a €11,000 cash prize. The competing films cover a range of themes, from personal and intimate stories to global socio-political issues.
Among the contenders in the Best Nordic Documentary category are Balomania by Sissel Morell Dargis, Civil Disobedience by Thomas A. Østbye, and The Day Iceland Stood Still by Pamela Hogan. The lineup showcases a diversity of subjects, including films from Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and beyond.
The festival also highlights emerging filmmakers through the New Nordic Voice competition, aimed at nurturing talent making its early mark on the industry. Films such as As the Tide Comes In by Juan Palacios and Death of a Saint by Patricia Bbaale Bandak are set to compete for a €5,000 prize.
In addition to juried prizes, all competition films will be eligible for the City of Malmö’s Audience Award, offering the public a chance to vote on their favorite film. The winner will receive a €2,500 cash prize.
