Porto/Post/Doc announces first titles for 2024 festival

The upcoming edition of the Porto/Post/Doc festival has unveiled several sections of its programme. Spread across multiple strands, this year’s festival confronts issues of identity, memory, history, and cultural expression.

One of the central highlights of the festival is the thematic program, «Europe Does Not Exist, I’ve Been There». This program addresses the complex question of European identity by examining whether Europe is a culturally and politically coherent entity, or if it is marked by fragmentation and competing narratives. The title of the program, borrowed from the famous quote by Slovenian philosopher #Slavoj Žižek#, sets the tone for a provocative exploration of European integration, nationalism, and the evolving nature of borders. Through a selection of films, the program aims to question how Europe is perceived from both within and beyond its borders.

In addition to its thematic focus on European identity, Porto/Post/Doc also features a strong focus on the intersection of music and film through the «Transmission Competition». This competition is devoted to films that use music as both a narrative tool and a means of storytelling. Among the highlights of the competition is the special screening of films featuring influential musicians such as #Brian Eno# and #Lee Ranaldo#. The competition includes seven films in total, each of which explores the ways music can shape the perception of a narrative, reflecting the broader aim of Transmission to connect different forms of creative expression through film.

Porto/Post/Doc also emphasises cross-cultural dialogue through its collaboration with the Centro de Arte Moderna (CAM), which presents the «ENGAWA» program. This section showcases contemporary Japanese documentary films that provide insights into Japanese society, culture, and its global interactions. Key films include works by directors #Yu Araki# and #Kaori Oda#, whose projects delve into Japan’s history and memory.
