Shaping tomorrow’s film markets: a glimpse into the future

Written by:

Post-COVID, the film industry is grappling with fundamental shifts spurred by multiple factors, including health crises, #digitalisation, #climate change#, and more. Addressing these challenges, Thessaloniki International Film Festival introduced a Think Tank series, «Shaping the Film Markets of Tomorrow», in collaboration with #Cannes’ Marché du Film, Berlinale’s European Film Market, and The Catalysts.

The initiative aimed to discuss pressing issues, and upcoming hurdles and foster an open dialogue within European Film Markets. Over 100 film professionals joined these discussions across prominent Film Markets such as AGORA, Venice Production Bridge, #IFFR Pro, and #DOK Leipzig#, among others.

Primary insights included:

  • «People and Networks»: The primary reason for attending a Film Market is networking. Markets have evolved into significant audiovisual production and distribution hubs, serving as strategic crossroads for commercial deals and global networking.

  • «Pressure on Markets»: Film markets face multiple pressures, from cost inflation to ecological crises. These challenges are driving a shift towards greener practices, new partnership strategies, and a reassessment of projects’ selection processes.

  • «Inclusivity and Sustainability»: Film markets must break traditional power structures, become more inclusive, and offer access to information and contacts. They should promote sustainable practices without necessitating complete digitization.

Key takeaways from the Think Tanks were:

  • «Future Support and Inclusivity»: Film markets should integrate young professionals, promote diversity, and ensure accessibility.

  • «Hybrid Approach»: Digitalisation should complement physical events, not replace them.

  • «Balance and Environment»: Balancing growth and well-being while embracing ecologically friendly practices is crucial.

  • «Navigating Funding Uncertainty»: With shrinking finances, film markets must explore new financing sources and adjust accreditation prices for inclusivity.

  • «Collaboration»: Forming a coalition for information exchange and solution generation could help these markets adapt and grow.

Launched in November 2022, the Think Tank series provided a much-needed platform to navigate the challenging and changing landscape of the film markets. With its conclusion at Cannes, it has set the foundation for a more dynamic, resilient, and inclusive future for European Film Markets.
