Sunny Side of the Doc has announced its latest lineup following a global call for entries last October. The event received over 130 project submissions from 45 countries, indicating a significant international interest, particularly from filmmakers in African and Asia-Pacific nations.

The majority of the selected projects, about two-thirds, are from first or second-time filmmakers. This trend is a result of Sunny Side’s dedicated efforts over several years to attract and develop new voices in the documentary community, especially through the «Docs for the future« initiative.

According to #Mathieu Béjot#, Director of Strategy and Development at Sunny Side, the theme of Sustainable Development Goals has been pivotal in drawing a diverse range of high-quality submissions. The projects not only address various global issues but also reflect the interconnected nature of these challenges.

The event, scheduled for 6 and 7 February, will feature 12 selected projects pitched to an array of international decision-makers, including representatives from major broadcasters, streaming services, foundations, and other funding bodies. Participants include notable organizations like NRTVE, IDA, S4C, BBC, PBS, TG4, NHK, Arte, #German Films#, Channel 4, RAI, ZDF, Mediawan, Sky Deutschland, Canal Curta, Little Dot Studios, and France 24.

A jury composed of Jane Mote (The Whickers), Patricia Finneran (The StoryBoard Collective), and Mohammed Saïd Ouma (Documentary Africa Fund) will select the winning project, which will receive a €3,000 cash prize and two free market passes for the 35th edition of Sunny Side of the Doc, to be held from 24-27 June 2024 in La Rochelle.
