As part of the online Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, Cannes Docs brings its selection of screenings and events to the virtual festival, 22 – 26 June 2020.

Aside from the variety of workshops, industry events, screenings, as well as its culminating event, Doc Day, Cannes Docs has also curated 5 expert-led industry panels. Alongside festival partners, CPH:DOX, DOK Leipzig, Ji.hlava IDFF, Visions du Réel, and It’s All True/E Tudo Verdade will all discuss topical issues in the field of documentary film and festivals.

June 22, 2020

• 16:30 – 17:30: CPH:DOX – Documentary Production now – and beyond!
  • Speakers: Monica Hellström (Final Cut for Real); Sara Stockmann (Sonntag Pictures); Katrine Kiilgaard, CPH:DOX Deputy Director and Head of Industry; Tereza Simikova, Head of CPH:FORUM.
  • About: Navigate production and distribution in times of pandemic with two of Denmark’s most skilled documentary film producers. In conversation with members of the CPH:DOX team, the first festival to adapt online in the wake of Coronavirus, the quartet will discuss topics such as: How do they adjust their strategies in order to secure the financing of their projects, traditionally anchored in film festival’s industry platforms, nowadays also happening online? What trends do they see in the way documentaries are being produced? How do they expect the production landscape to change, once the pandemic is over?

• 16:30 – 17:30: It’s All True/E Tudo Verdade – History through me: the autobiographical/political trend in Latin American docs.
  • Speakers: Argentine filmmaker Andrés Di Tella; Brazilian filmmaker Petra Costa. Moderated by Amir Labaki, Founder and Director; Anna Glogowski, Senior International Advisor.
  • About: One of the most innovative trends of the contemporary documentary in Latin America is the confluence between political documentary and autobiographical narrative. Here, two of the region’s finest models of this process go in conversation with Brazil’s It’s All True/E Tudo Verdade festival.

  • About: Drawing attention to film festival programming selections with regards to regional balance, this Doc Talk explores the possibilities of wider diversity in programming across the world. Questions to be addressed: Where are the boundaries between the purely curatorial approach emphasizing artistic forms of films and the focus on capturing the variety of current movements in world cinema? What should the filmmakers do in order to have their films screened at film festivals outside their cultural milieu?

  • About: In considering various scenarios, this Doc Talk looks at the central question: What strategic role do festivals play in the films’ journey, and how can they contribute and support different types of distribution?
