The 12th Bozcaada International Festival of Ecological Documentary (BIFED) concluded with its award ceremony on the Aegean island of Bozcaada, capping four days of screenings and events focused on environmental issues. 45 titles were showcased across the island’s venues.
In the Main Competition, the Fethi Kayaalp Grand Award went to Falling Sky (Düşen Gökyüzü), directed by Eryk Rocha and Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha, a Brazil–Italy co-production centered on the #Yanomami people. The Madam Melpo Second Prize was awarded to Yintah by Michael Toledano and Jennifer Wickham, documenting Wet’suwet’en resistance to pipeline construction in Canada. A Jury Special Mention recognized The Town That Drove Away by Natalie Pietch and Grzegorz Piekarski, which portrays the submergence of the ancient city of Hasankeyf due to damming.
In the Student Competition, the Naci Güçhan Award went to Bloodline (Köken) by Polish filmmaker Wojciech Węglarz. The İdil Schneider-Bulut Sound & Music Award honored Geographies of Solitude by Jacquelyn Mills, following researcher and environmentalist Zoe Lucas on Sable Island and noted for its 16mm imagery and sound design.
Reflecting BIFED’s participatory ethos, this year’s trophies were collectively created: on October 8, ceramic artists Reyhan and Mustafa Hoşnut led a workshop where participants shaped «Mother Earth» figures, later kiln-fired and selected by a public vote to become the official awards.
