Six weeks remain until the start of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, which will take place from 25 to 30 October. As every year, the festival will bring new original documentaries, thematic retrospectives, the best in experimental filmmaking and a number of non-competitive programme sections. Now, Ji.hlava IDFF has announced the first titles and thematic section of its 2022 programme.

On offer will be the largest showcase of Filipino cinema in Europe, a programme reflecting on the Russian aggression in Ukraine, «war» as a film theme, as well as new works by Armenian filmmaking legend #Artavazd Peleshyan# and Ukrainian director #Sergei Loznitsa#, whose new film The Kiev Trial reconstructs the Nazi trial from 1946. The Ji.hlava’s Inspiration Forum’s discussions will revolve around #freedom, #technology, the theory of degrowth and the war in #Ukraine. Supplementing this discussion will also be a section called «Notes on the War» composed of world documentary classics such as Alan Renais’ Night and Fog (1956), Stanley Milgram’s Obedience (1962), and Jayne Loader and Kevin and Pierce Rafferty’s Atomic Café (1982).

The Special Screenings section will offer a two-hour director’s cut of Jan Švankmajer’s Kunstkamera and the film opus Nature. The «Fascinations» section will present more than two dozen films from twenty-two countries, among them #Brazil, #Finland, #Cuba, #Iraq, #Australia and #Taiwan, while the «Exprmntl.cz» section will offer more than ten films this year. Then, the popular section of music films, «Siren Test», will not be missing will a roster that includes Love, Deutschmarks and Death (dir. Cem Kaya) and Jørgen Leth’s Music for Black Pigeons.

Ji.hlava IDFF will then, once again, highlight the best and latest in Czech documentaries, including its first-ever VR project, Darkening (dir. Ondřej Moravec). Further films include the story of the life of Czechoslovak composer #Jan Kapr# in Kapr Code (dir. Lucie Králová) and a portrait of one of the best sport climbers in the world in Adam Ondra: Pushing the Limits (dir. Jan Šimánek, Petr Záruba).
